L’attività caritativa della Chiesa. Spunti di lettura della Deus Caritas est
Abstract
Prolusione tenuta nella Giornata di studio “Il profilo specifico dell’attività caritativa della Chiesa” nella Pontificia Università della Santa Croce, Roma 15 novembre 2006.
L’uomo è tanto più profondamente se stesso quanto più cresce nell’amore e nella donazione. Un amore vissuto non soltanto nei ‘rapporti stretti’, ma che abbracci ordinatamente anche i più lontani. Donde il bisogno di ripensare la cooperazione internazionale nei termini della civiltà dell’amore. La Chiesa ha vissuto ed insegnato dal suo inizio l’importanza dell’attività caritativa: siccome ha ricevuto la missione di annunziare il Dio- Amore, il suo impegno in tale ambito forma parte integrante della sua stessa natura. È un amore che comprende le persone nella loro pienezza, sia materiale che spirituale; perciò deve fare in qualche modo visibile l’amore di Dio. Poiché l’amore si può trasmettere soltanto se si è profondamente convinti, occorre sottolineare che la forza dell’attività caritativa della Chiesa dipenderà dalla forza della fede e dell’amore di Dio di coloro che la esercitano.
Man is much more profoundly himself when he grows more in love and in self-gift. Such a love is one that is lived not solely in “strict relationships”, but one that ordinately embraces even those farthest away; hence, there is a need to rethink international cooperation in terms of a civilization of love. From its very beginning, the Church has lived and taught the importance of charitable activities. Since she has received the mission to proclaim God-Love, her works in such a context form an integrating part of her very nature. It is a love that understands persons in their entirety, in terms of both matter and spirit; therefore, the love of God ought to be made visible in some way. Furthermore, love is able to be transmitted only if one is profoundly convinced of it; therefore, one also needs to emphasize that the strength of the Church’s charitable activities shall depend upon the strength of faith and the love of God of those who accomplish it.
