Abstract

The author considers a statement by Saint Josemaría to elucidate the charisma and spirituality of the Opus Dei, which positions work as the cornerstone upon which one constructs, with the grace of God, the structure of personal sanctification and apostolate. For those who have received the vocation to the Opus Dei, identification with Christ—the essence and goal of Christian life—is realized through the imitation of his years of hidden life when he began redeeming human beings by working in a profession and leading a life akin to others. The Opus Dei emerged within the Church with distinct characteristics, notably its essential secularism and particular Christocentric perspective. To illustrate this, the author draws upon texts by Saint Josemaría, many of which are unpublished and in the process of publication.
