The article provides an overview of recent studies on the resurrection, in the perspective of the relationship between event and mystery and in an epistemological framework that correlates historical research and theological reflection. The singularity of Christ’s resurrection is shown, an event rooted in history but at the same time transcending it and anticipating its eschatological fulfillment. The first section, on historical research on the resurrection, presents the main explanations of the New Testament data, scholarly consensus on the various theories, and the main results of the research. The second section addresses espistemological questions about the possibilities and limitations of historical research and about the nature of credibility judgments and assent of faith and the knowledge to which they give access. The third section considers the transcendent dimension of the resurrection in light of the main contributions of recent theological reflection, from which the christological and soteriological significance of Christ’s paschal mystery emerge.
