La metafora della Ecclesia Mater nella letteratura antidonatista

Gli studiosi moderni hanno analizzato la maternità della Chiesa senza prendere in considerazione la letteratura antidonatista. Tuttavia un attento studio dei documenti antidonatisti rivela molti elementi interessanti. Secondo Ottato e Agostino la nozione di madre andava riferita a tutti i credenti, perché il corpo di Cristo era formato da tutti quelli che la Chiesa aveva generato come figli attraverso il battesimo. Secondo entrambi i vescovi africani anche i donatisti amministravano un battesimo valido, ma solo Agostino dimostrò come la salvezza potesse trovarsi al di fuori delle viscera Ecclesiae. Allora questo articolo si confronta con l’immagine dell’Ecclesia mater, per come è illustrata nell’Adversus Donatis, di Ottato pubblicato per rispondere al vescovo donatista Parmeniano, e per come è illustrata in tutto quello che Agostino scrisse contro gli scismatici (Tractatus, Sermones, Epistulae). In tal modo presenta un quadro della teologia africana del iv secolo.

Modern scholars have studied the maternity of the Church independently from the anti-Donatist literature. A careful study of the anti-Donatist documents reveals many interesting elements. According to Optatus and Augustine the notion of mother was abscribed to all believers, because the body of Christ was formed by all those the Church bore as children through the baptism. According to both African bishops, also the donatists gave a valid baptism, but only Augustine demonstrated how the salvation could be found outside of the viscera Ecclesiae. The article deals with the image of the Ecclesia mater as illustrated in the Adversus Donatistas of Optatus published in answer to the donatist bishop Parmenianus, and in all that Augustine penned against the schismatics (Tractatus, Sermones, Epistulae). By doing so, it presents a picture of the African theology of the fourth century.
